The following question was asked of a marja`:
As-Salaamu `Alaikum wa Rahmatullah,
Noble shaikh of the Shafi`ii school. I had a question. My name is Mahdi Lock. I am English but based in Morocco. What is the ruling on group dhikr in which the gathering is making the dhikr in one voice?
What have the senior scholars, such as Imams An-Nawawi and others said on this subject? May Allah reward you for your time to answer this question.
The marja,` Imam Ahmad Hasan, may Allah preserve him, answered with what follows:
Imam An-Nawawi said the following in his commentary on the Hadith Collection of Imam Muslim ibn Al-Hajjaj, vol.17, pp.13-15 under the hadith, ‘Indeed Allah has angels that travel around, seeking the gatherings of dhikr’:
“It is established in this hadith the virtue of dhikr, its’ gatherings and sitting with the people of dhikr.”
